Description
One of the most famous coins from American circulation history is the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Introduced by the United States Mint in 1916, the coins feature one of the greatest images ever display on an American coin.
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar debuted in 1916 along with two other new designs on US currency. The so-called Barber Coinage that had been in circulation since 1892, designed by US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber, was in the process of being replaced in 1916.
Adolph A. Weinmans design won out as the new image for the half-dollar coin, and he even had a separate one accepted for the dime. The Walking Liberty image depicts the figure of Liberty as she walks forward toward a setting sun holding branches in one hand and the American flag draped over her shoulder.
