The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf was introduced in 1988, almost a decade after the gold version of the coin. The Silver Maple Leaf shares the exact same designs on both the obverse and reverse as its gold counterpart, with only Queen Elizabeth IIs image on the obverse changing over time to reflect her age.
The image of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse will be one of three designs. The original, first-generation design is included only on coins with a 1988 or 1898 year of issue, and were designed by Arnold Machin.
