One of Americas greatest classic coin designs is the Buffalo Nickel. Sometimes referred to in its day as the Indian Head Nickel, this design from James Earle Fraser was used on the nations 5-cent piece from 1913 to 1938, and today it is replicated on countless products ranging from the US Mints American Gold Buffalo wall street coin to silver rounds.
The Buffalo Nickel debuted from the United States Mint in 1913. It was designed by James Earle Fraser during the administration of William H. Taft, and Fraser brought his lifes experience growing up on the plains of Minnesota and the Dakotas to bear in the design. A native of Winona, Minnesota, Fraser traveled extensively throughout the region in the late 19th century with his father, encountering the American bison and interacting with Native American tribes.
